Hello! My name is JaVonne, but you can call me JB. I’ve been in the technology field for five years, and I currently work as a Technical Service Manager for a major retail/athletic company. I started this blog to not only share the hills and valleys of my journey into tech, but also to highlight black women in the tech field.

According to an article by builtin.com written in May 2021, only 3% of computing-related jobs are held by African American women. Even when I was working deskside support and interacting with users regularly, I can’t tell you the number of times a black woman working in the warehouse asked me how to break into the field, where to start, or made a like I wish I could do what you do.

So why can’t you?

Maybe you don’t know where to go or who to talk to. Or maybe you don’t know these types of roles exist. We get pushed to the shadows, seeing as tech is really a male dominated field.

Technically Melanin is here to show you the beautifully melanated women in various tech roles, from help desk to desktop support to software engineering, even director roles in tech. Hear their stories of what made them want to go into the technology field, how they started, and what their experience has been like.

Information on where/how to get started, college vs. certifications, finding your niche (Are you interested in the software component, networking, or the physical components of hardware?) The possibilities are endless!
