Creating My Blog Site

In the digital age, sharing our thoughts, experiences, and passions has never been easier. One of the most empowering ways to do this is through a personal blog. Recently, I embarked on the journey of creating my own blog site, and today, I’m excited to share with you the tools and processes I used to bring my vision to life.

Choosing the Right Platform

The first decision I made was which platform to use for hosting my blog. After some research and consideration of my needs, I opted for WordPress. WordPress is well-known for its user-friendliness, flexibility, and community support. It offers a vast array of themes and plugins that allow for customization without requiring in-depth technical knowledge. I chose WordPress.com Creator (formerly WordPress.com Business). Plans begin at $4/ month for a starter and go up to more expensive plans for Entrepreneur and Enterprise users.

But there are other platforms you can use to host your blog:

  • Bluehost
  • Wix
  • Squarespace
  • Hostinger
  • Dreamhost
  • Elementor

Domain and Hosting

Next, I needed to secure a domain name and hosting service. I chose a domain name that reflects both my personality and the themes of my blog, but also something visitors to my website will remember. I was able to get my domain name through WordPress for only $22 a year. It was simple to set up. All you have to do is enter the name you want for the website and it lets you know if it’s available. If the name isn’t available but not being used by the person who owns it, it’s possible to purchase it from them.

Designing the Layout

With WordPress installed and my domain set up, I jumped into designing the layout of my blog. I explored various WordPress themes before settling on one that worked with my aesthetic preferences and functional requirements. Customization was key here, as I wanted my blog to stand out while maintaining readability and usability. I chose the theme Astra, which was the simplest and one that was suggested by most bloggers that use WordPress.

Content Creation

The heart of any blog lies in its content. Armed with ideas and inspiration, I began drafting and refining my posts. The Elementor plugin has been a life saver when it comes to creating my blog posts and designing the web pages. I had no clue what I was doing and to be honest, I spent months stressing over getting my website set up the way I wanted. I found a video on YouTube by Tyler Moore. The tutorial for creating pages, setting the color scheme, adding your logo, setting a header and footer was simple and easy to follow. Even previewing what pages will look like on the PC, tablet, or phone.

Plugins for Functionality

To enhance the functionality of my blog, I installed a few essential plugins. These included tools for search engine optimization (SEO), social media integration, and analytics. The saving grace was the plugin for Convertkit, which is an email marketing. This keeps track of who subscribers to my monthly newsletter and allows me to easily send out the newsletter. Each plugin served a specific purpose in optimizing my blog’s performance and enhancing user experience. These are just a few of the ones I have installed:

  • All in One SEO- ranks how high your website and its content will appear in Google searches
  • Astra widgets- makes it easy to customize your website and is designed for the Astra theme
  • Convertkit- email marketing automation
  • Elementor- web page builder
  • Layout Grid- allows for customizable columns and blocks to make your pages and posts unique
  • Starter Templates- templates for your pages. Allows you pull blocks or pages from different templates.

Legal Pages for the Blog

I had no idea that blogs needed legal pages. These pages help protect you, your content, and/or business. You want to be compliant with the law, protect your intellectual property, and protect your personal liability.

  • Privacy Policy
  • Terms and Conditions
  • Disclaimer
  • Cookies

And in some countries you have to be GDPR compliant (General Data Protection Regulation).

I stressed over these for months because I had no idea where to start or what to include in the pages. Luckily, I found a blogger who is also a lawyer that has templates for your legal pages. Her name is Lucrezia Iapichino and her blog site is Blogging for New Bloggers.  Not only does she help you with your legal pages, but she helps you to make your website lucrative. She has an online community on Facebook that allows you to share your content, bounce ideas off others, and gain more traction for your blog/social media sites, and offers courses that are reasonably affordable.

Launch and Promotion

Finally, the day arrived to launch my blog! I promoted it across Instagram and engaged with potential readers through meaningful interactions. (Speaking of, shameless plug time: Follow me on IG at Technically_Melanin).Plus, I had some merch made to advertise the blog while at work or just out and about. Building an initial audience takes time and effort, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see people discover and engage with the content I’ve created.

Learning and Growing

Creating my blog site has been a journey of continuous learning and growth. I’ve learned valuable lessons about web design, content creation, and digital marketing along the way. Each new post is an opportunity to refine my writing style, experiment with new ideas, and connect with readers from diverse backgrounds.

Building my blog site has been an enriching experience fueled by creativity, curiosity, and a passion for sharing stories. With the right tools and dedication, anyone can create a platform to express themselves and contribute to meaningful conversations online. Whether you’re sharing your expertise, documenting your travels, or discussing your hobbies, the possibilities are endless.

If you’re considering starting your own blog, I encourage you to take the plunge! It’s a rewarding journey that allows you to explore your interests, connect with others, and leave a digital footprint that reflects who you are. Who knows? Your blog could be the next source of inspiration for readers around the world.

Happy blogging!
