Australia Bans Social Media for Children under 16

In a historic move, Australia becomes the first country to ban social media for children under 16. The law was passed in November 2024 and went into effect on December 10th, 2025. The law was proposed to protect children from harmful content, excessive screentime, and mental health risks. Platforms affected are Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, and Kick. Companies must deactivate accounts belonging to users under 16 and put in place age verification measures, such as uploading identification, selfies, bank accounts, etc. Those not in compliance face a fine of $49 million AUD ($32 million USD). The ban has been praised by parents and child advocates, while free-speech advocates are against it. Malaysia has plans for a similar ban next year, while countries such as Denmark, Norway, France, Spain, and New Zealand are weighing the same ban.

Paramount Poses Hostile Bid for Warner Bros. Discovery

In an unexpected move to counter Netflix, Paramount launches a hostile bid for Warner Bros. Discovery. This is a competing cash offer against Netflix’s $72 billion deal already in place.  The bid was funded by David Ellison, Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, and Abu Dhabi), and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, and major banks. Paramount seeks to appeal directly to shareholders, stating the offer is “superior” and would create a “stronger Hollywood.” Paramount feels it would be a better fit for Warner Bros. Discovery as it has experience with cable news channels. The company desires to keep both entities together, while Netflix plans to separate Warner Bros and Discovery. Lawmakers are calling for oversight of the Netflix and Paramount bids, citing antitrust and monopoly concerns, and foreign influence.
